After weeks of trouble starting the car it finally came down to the battery. The replacement is a smaller, dry cell, Odyssey Extreme 25 which not only holds a charge for more than 5 minutes, but is also much better suited for the furnace under the bonnet. Fitting it was a bit of a fiddle but I'm quite proud of my tie-down strap and front cover.
